Evaluation of Glomerular Filtration Rate, Albuminuria and Hematuria in Living Donor Candidates
2021
Kidney donor candidates undergo careful evaluation to detect the presence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and risk factors for its development. Evaluations of glomerular filtration rate (GFR), albuminuria, and hematuria are the main methods for the detection of predonation CKD, and alterations in these measures have been related to increased risk of kidney failure in the general population. This chapter reviews the pathophysiology and measurement methods for GFR, albuminuria, and hematuria and the risk of kidney failure related to these measures, including recommendations from the 2017 Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) Clinical Practice Guideline on the Evaluation and Care of Living Kidney Donors, recommendations from the 2012 KDIGO Clinical Practice Guideline for the Evaluation and Management of Chronic Kidney Disease for evaluation of GFR and albuminuria, and recommendations from the 2012 American Urological Association (AUA) guidelines for evaluation of hematuria.
