Characterization Microorganisms and Identification of Antimicrobial Resistance Pattern in Different Parts of Labeo Rohita: Monitoring and Managing Aquaculture

2021
Infectious diseases caused by several microorganisms are rising worldwide and the emerging antibiotic resistance pattern in the global ecosystem is a major public health concern. Aquatic animals like fishes are vulnerable to any infectious diseases mostly associated with the multidrug–resistant bacteria that can be spread to human through consumption of the contaminated fishes or its byproducts. The objective of the study was to characterize and compare the bacterial species from three different organs – intestine, gill, liver of Labeo rohita of different sources and antibiotic resistance pattern of the corresponding isolates for an improved understanding of aquaculture production. Labeo rohita were obtained from different markets in Kolkata and the desired organs were isolated to evaluate the viable count, microscopic characteristics and identification of the microorganism by gram staining procedure. Present study revealed the gills have the highest microbial load among all the three tissues. Combination of gram-positive and gram-negative organisms were present in both the gills and liver, but in intestine only gram-negative microbes. Mostly spherical shaped bacteria were observed, rod shaped organisms were present in intestine only. A deep yellow colored colony with unique shining surface was observed only in the gills. Most bacteria isolates were gram-negative like Aeromonas, Vibrio and Pseudomonas species and major groups of gram–positives were Streptococcus. Pollution in multisource waters are mostly the reason behind the antimicrobial resistant  bacteria present in the widely used fishes and  thus possessing a potential threat for human health which must be considered  during fish farming and aquaculture.
