FDG positron emission tomographic imaging of the effect of an intrauterine device.

The effect of a copper-containing intrauterine device (IUD) was demonstrated on a staging fluorodeoxyglucose (FOG) positron emission tomographic (PET) study of a 45-year-old woman with melanoma. Increased FOG uptake was noted in the area corresponding to the uterus. Computed tomography (CT) showed an IUD within the uterine cavity but no myometrial or luminal abnormality. Clinical examination and follow-up revealed no disease in this region. The sterile foreign-body reaction in the uterus supposed to be generated by the IUD was displayed in vivo by the increased uptake of FOG. (authors)
