Evidence check: Amputee care standards

2015
This Evidence Check review examines available standards or guidelines for the management of children or adults with amputation, and summarises the peer-reviewed literature on post-operative dressings. While the guidelines differ in many ways including their intended audience, jurisdiction of coverage, amputation type and extent of evidence reviewed, all emphasise the importance of multidisciplinary teams, tailored rehabilitation programs and provision of timely support services to patients and their families. Guidelines that address post-operative dressings recommend the rigid dressing approach. This is consistent with evidence from the peer-reviewed literature, which despite some methodological limitations suggests rigid dressings are associated with more favourable outcomes.
