Supporting Spaceflight Multiteam Systems throughout Long-Duration Exploration Missions

2020
The success of future long-duration exploration missions (LDEMs) will hinge on effective coordination and collaboration across spaceflight multiteam systems (SFMTSs) composed of multiple interdependent teams separated by unprecedented degrees of space and time. This chapter provides a foundation for the development and implementation of a ‘countermeasure toolkit’ designed to help facilitate the SFMTS functioning. We begin by leveraging the broader literature on multiteam systems to clarify the key characteristics of SFMTSs and the challenges these systems are likely to encounter during an LDEM. Then, we advance a framework for a countermeasure toolkit that allows NASA to systematically understand, anticipate, diagnose, and facilitate SFMTS functioning throughout the mission.
