Corrosion Fatigue and Repassivation Investigations of CrNiMo Austenitic Stainless Steels in Chloride Environment
2013
Austenitic stainless steels of the CrNiMo type for the oil and gas industry have to withstand extreme conditions such as mechanical stress in corrosive environments combined with raised temperatures. The susceptibility to corrosion is effectively decreased by the alloying elements. CrNiMo alloys show a high corrosion resistance due to their ability to form a stable passive layer. The passive layer can be damaged by slip steps, whereupon this activated area is susceptible to dissolution. Therefore localized corrosion has to be prevented by quick repassivation.
