Various embodiments of the present invention, the eighth to microelectromechanical systems and photonic interconnects employing micro-electro-mechanical systems. An embodiment of a micro-electromechanical system of the present invention comprises a lens structure (1704) and an actuator. The lens structure comprises a substantially transparent membrane (1710) with a flexible, curved surface and a reservoir (1708, 1710) that contains a fluid that is fluidly coupled to the membrane. The actuator system operatively coupled to the reservoir to exert pressure on the fluid to change the curvature of the diaphragm and the focus of the lens structure.
