Construction planning beyond critical path

2002
The aim of the project manager is to complete the work within a fixed time and to the specified standards of quality. Uncertainties due to various unpredictable factors such as weather conditions and price fluctuations affect the planning techniques for optimization. In addition, drastic improvements in designs and technology have added new dimension to the industry. Network logic developed for CPM and PERT do not incorporate a practical approach to allow for uncertainties among the activities in the network. Therefore, lack of flexibility and incorporation of interrelationships, limit their effectiveness. This can be effectively taken care of by the Precedence Networking. The objective of this paper is to develop the various interrelationships between the activities using Precedence Networking. This produces a detailed scheduling system and provides a means for planning, assessing progress, and controlling project activities from conception to the completion of the project. This has been illustrated using a case study.
