Improving chemical and sensory quality of high-oleic peanut through agronomic manipulation

2021
Abstract As compared with its normal-oleic counterpart, high-oleic peanut has better keeping quality and is heart-healthier. Peanut produce living up to the high-oleic standard and with good taste is important to food processing sectors. Peanut grown in Jiaodong region in Shandong peninsula is well recognized for its better taste than produce from other areas in northern China. The aim of present study was to explore the possibility of improving chemical and eating quality of high-oleic peanut through application of foliar fertilizers in regions other than Jiaodong. Three high-oleic peanut cultivars bred by our research group, namely Huayu 09C2, Huayu 9621, and Huayu 962, were used. The first two were planted in Fuxin, Liaoning with foliar spray of Fosforil at 2250 mL/ha, and the third one was sown in Jvnan, Shandong with foliar spray of Foliplus at 1500/3000 mL/ha. Peanut harvested from the treatment plots and controls was analyzed for chemical and sensory quality. This study demonstrated the feasibility of improving chemical and eating quality of high-oleic peanut through agronomic manipulation. Foliar spraying with Fosforil at 2250 mL/ha in Huayu 09C2 and Huayu 9621 cultivars in Fuxin and with Foliplus at 1500/3000 mL/ha in Huayu 962 cultivar in Jvnan proved to maintain high oleate content, and the Fosforil treatment was effective in raising the intensity of sweetness of roasted kernels.
