CARTOGRAFÍA SOBRE PELIGRO DE INUNDACIÓN EN EL DISTRITO MINERO LOS BERROS, PROVINCIA DE SAN JUAN

2012
This paper aims to demonstrate the importance of using thematic maps as a diagnostic tool for natural hazards and the proper planning of land uses. As a case of study, it has been taken the city of Los Berros, located in the Sarmiento Department, 80 km to the SSW of the capital of the San Juan province. In the work, geological, geomorphological and hydrological maps, and slopes maps, were elaborated to determine the physical characteristics of the territory under study. Besides, taking into account the current and / or potential activities carried out by man, it has been constructed a flood hazard map showing areas with high susceptibility to suffer this phenomenon. The methodology included the application of geotechnology to the development of a DEM (Digital Elevation Model) and a slope map, along with direct interpretation of satellite imagery for the definition of the geology, geomorphology and hydrography. The simultaneous analysis of the above information, along with periodistic collected news, oral communications of locals, and field surveys allowed to define the areas that have been flooded in recent years and those with potential to be flooded. It can be concluded that the use of thematic mapping is useful when planning land use in a given space. In the case of Los Berros, the application of this methodology allowed the
