Six Sigma Method for Improvement of Crude Palm Oil (CPO) Quality

2019
Companies engaged in oil palm plantations are still refusing products because of incompatibility oil quality specifications, therefore oil must be reprocessed. This study aims to control the quality of Crude Palm Oil (CPO) which has free fatty acid specification levels, moisture content and impurities by applying the concepts of DMAIC and FMEA. The study results indicate that there are some data outside the boundaries system and need to be revised. CTQ which is potential product crude palm oil is the level of free fatty acid which is less than 3.5% the water content is less than 0.15%. Process capability calculation still has a Cpk value below one which indicates there are several parts of the process variation located outside the specification limits. From measurement results, DPMO value are equal to 138,700 with the sigma value 2.59. FMEA is used to determine the main factors that cause a decrease in quality and the highest RPN value is 280 with causes of failure, operators are not careful and lack discipline in sorting fruit. The proposed improvement in product quality uses $5\mathbf{W}+1\mathbf{H}$ by making improvements to all sources of quality degradation such as making some improvements to the machine to work optimally and checking every level of raw materials that are in accordance with the standards and increasing inspection standards to maintain stability from routine process variations.
