EL ESTRÉS EN LOS PADRES ANTE EL NACIMIENTO Y LA INTERNACIÓN DE UN BEBÉ NACIDO PREMATURO EN LA UNIDAD DE CUIDADOS INTENSIVOS NEONATALES

La internacion de un bebe prematuro en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos Neonatales (UCIN) se constituye en un suceso vital estresante para sus padres. Varias investigaciones se han ocupado de estudiar este hecho caracterizando al mismo como un suceso traumatico para la familia (Shaw et al., 2006). Algunos autores han encontrado que el nivel de estres y los sintomas depresivos constituyen los factores con mayor poder explicativo y predictivo respecto de como la familia afrontara la internacion (Speer, Leef, Epps & Locke, 2002). El presente estudio tiene como objetivo estudiar el estres percibido en un grupo de padres cuyos hijos prematuros se encuentran internados en la UCIN de una clinica privada de la Ciudad Autonoma de Buenos Aires. Para este fin se ha utilizado la Escala de Estres Parental: Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos (EEP:NICU) version adaptada (Caruso & Mikulic, en prensa), de la escala original Parental Stressor Scale: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (PSS:NICU,Miles & Holditch Davis,1987; Miles & Funk, 1998). Los resultados obtenidos muestran que si bien los padres perciben la internacion de su bebe en la UCIN como un suceso moderadamente estresante, las alteraciones en sus roles como padres se transforman en los aspectos mas estresantes para ellos. Abstract STRESS IN PARENTS OF A PREMATURE BABY HOSPITALIZED IN THE NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT The hospitalization of a premature baby in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) becomes a stressful life event for their parents. Several studies have demonstrated that this is a traumatic event for the family (Shaw et al., 2006). Some authors have found that the level of stress and the depressive symptoms are two of the major influences on how the family will be coping with the hospitalization (Speer, Leef, Epps and Locke, 2002). The aim of this study is to explore the perceived stress of a group of parents whose premature newborns are hospitalized in the NICU of a private clinic in Buenos Aires. For this purpose the Parental Stressor Scale: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (PSS: NICU, Miles & Holditch Davis,1987; Miles & Funk,1998) was used.This instrument has been adapted to our context (Caruso & Mikulic, in press). The results show that even though parents perceive the hospitalization of their baby in the NICU as a moderately stressful event, the alterations in their parents role were the most stressful event for them.
