Dr. J. B. Howell was born in Winnsboro, Texas, on September 9, 1914. He graduated from Baylor University in Waco, Texas, in 1935, and from Baylor University College of Medicine in Dallas, Texas, in 1939. He interned at Baylor University Hospital, beginning in July 1939. Then he did a 5-year preceptorship with Dr. Bedford Shelmire in his office practice. While enrolled in a postgraduate course at the New York Skin and Cancer Hospital, then affiliated with Columbia University, he also worked in the office of Drs. Sulzberger and Baer, who had evening hours for practice. As the final elements of his training, he spent a month in the office of Dr. Clark Finnerud in Chicago and 6 weeks in the section on dermatology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
