Endverwahrung von Salzkavernen : Stand der Entwicklung

1998
Despite the major significance of salt caverns for the storage of gases and liquids, the industry still has no generally acceptable concept available for the abandonment of caverns of this type. Therefore, when a cavern is shut down - whether for technical or economic reasons - the owner can therefore not be released from his longterm obligations to monitor the cavern in question. For many years, there was a fear that there was no longterm guarantee for the integrity ofa cavern which was filled with brine then sealed for abandonment. However, new theoretical and practical knowledge reveals that a longterm increase in pressure above lithostatic pressure as a result of convergence is improbable because the permeability ofthe evaporite at this stage increases dramatically. The consequence would therefore primarily be the penetration of brine into the rock mainly into the roof zone associated with a simultaneous stabilisation of salt pressure increase. Because of the extremely low convergence rates, the brine impregnation of the rock only takes place very slowly over very long periods of time. Planned RD reliable prognosis are however not currently possible.
