IR-Spectroscopic Studies on the Hydration of Polyglycolethers

1987
In order to get information on the hydration of polyethylenoxid deri- vates PEO like Open image in new window or Open image in new window their saturated aqueous solutions in CCl4 were investigated. Tne total water content was determined by Karl Fischer-titration and the H2O-interactions were evaluated by infrared spectroscopy in the region of the OH-stretching vibrations as well as of the OH-combination vibration (antisymmetric stretch + bending). In these ternary solutions about 1 mol H2O/NP-10 and about 0.4 mol H2O/NP-1O-M form hydrogen bonds with the surfactants. The spectra indicate, that these differences may be due to the larger acceptor strength of the alkoholic OH compared to the ether-oxygen group of NP-10. The different possibilities of water — surfactant interactions will be discusssed.
