The volume L’eruzione vesuviana del 26 aprile 1872. Memorie storiche by Francesco Mastriani, published by Gaetano Nobile in 1872, does not appear in bibliographies on the novelist and is neglected even by studies on Nineteenth-century ‘Vesuvian’ literature. This essays aims to set the work within a double context: the corpus of the ‘popular’ author beloved to a wide readership and the vast output of studies and narrative works on Mount Vesuvius that precisely in the second half of the Nineteenth century experienced a boom.
