Projection display device and a light source apparatus

By optimizing the arrangement of a laser light source and a homogenizer, it is possible to reduce the size of a light source for obtaining a high output light. A laser light source (1) has a light emission region for emitting an elliptical laser beam. A light collection lens (2) collects the laser beam emitted from the laser light source (1). A rod integrator (4) has a rectangular incident plane on the light collection flux of the light collection lens (2). A spatial optical modulator (7) modulates the laser beam emitted from the rod integrator (4). A projection lens (8) projects the laser beam modulated by the spatial optical modulator (7). The rod integrator (4) has a rectangular incident plane. The laser light source (1) is arranged so that the longitudinal direction of the light emission region is parallel to the long side direction of the incident plane of the rod integrator (4).
