Text and tables are provided for the 1992-93 Indian National Health Survey for Maharashtra state. Some comparisons with the 1991 Census are given. There is evidence of age heaping at digits ending in 0; reporting is better for female age and better than in the Census. The de facto sample population was 21840 of whom 43% was urban. 89.2% were male household heads and 10.8% were female heads. 11.1% were aged under 30 years and 19.2% were aged over 60 years. 87.6% were currently married and 9.8% were widowed; 1.9% were never married. 77.3% were Hindus and 11.1% were Muslims. 6.6% were scheduled caste 10.0% were scheduled tribes and 83.4% were other. Mean household size was 5.5 members among 4063 sample households. 56.5% of household members aged 6 years and older were rural illiterate females and 42% were illiterate (20.5% of males and 44.1% of females). The median number of years of schooling was 4.5 years. 88% of males and 82% of females aged 6-10 years were attending school. 87% of urban and 63% of rural households had electricity. 91% of urban and 53% of rural households had piped drinking water. 59% had no sanitation facility. 72% in urban and 7% in rural areas had a flush toilet. 82% of urban households used gas or kerosene and over 80% in rural areas used wood. 47% did not own agricultural land. 70% in rural areas owned agricultural land. 50% of women were aged under 30 years. 51% of women reported no work (73% in urban and 35% in rural areas). Urban women and urban husbands tended to be better educated. The singulate mean age of marriage was 19.3 years for women and 24.9 years for men. The lowest median age at marriage was 14.7 years among scheduled castes. 21% of ever married women had married a first cousin and 5% had married a second cousin uncle or other blood relative. Rural fertility was 16% higher than urban fertility. The general fertility rate was 113 births per 1000 women (127 in rural and 95 in urban areas). For 1990-92 the total fertility rate was 2.9 children. 30% were first births and 27% were second births. The median birth interval was 28.7 months. The median age at first birth was 19 years. 14% of currently married women had unmet needs. Only 19% of women knew about AIDS.
