The following article treats of axial air bearings with micro nozzles, single nozzle bearings with additional groves in the bearing surface and sinter bearings. Static load, stiffness, eigenfrequency and damping in load direction, the eigenfrequency and damping of the tilt oscillation as well as the pitching motion at high velocity due to coquette flow is used as characterization. These quantities are quantified in experiments, simulated and finally verified in realistic application conditions. Because of its size the counter surface which has to be crossed by the air bearing is composed of segments. Most influencing variables are determined and a guideline for the design engineer is given.
