Halliday's Context Theory and The "Pendulum" of Literary Criticism

The differences between the social and historical criticism and formal criticism has existed for a long time.Can the external and internal research of literature be combined? The social and historical criticism plays an important role in literary study,with limitations.From Halliday's theory about language,we find that Halliday did a systematic exposition about internal and external links of the text.He proposes the correspondence in context level,semantic level and formal level,discovering the relations between the external world and the internal world in text clearly,and bringing forward a new social language of criticism which is different from traditional criticism.
