Immediate Breast Reconstruction with the Free TRAM Flap

: At M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, immediate breast reconstruction with the free transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous (TRAM) flap is the standard of care for those women desiring reconstruction after mastectomy. We have found the free TRAM to be safe, more reliable, cosmetically superior and comparable in resource cost when compared to other techniques of reconstruction. As expertise in microsurgical techniques continue to spread, hopefully, the advantages offered by the free TRAM will become available to more patients.
