Pakistan is a sovereign state in South Asia. It is bordered by Afghanistan and Iran to the west, India to the east, China to the far northeast, and has a 1,046-kilometre (650 mile) coastline along the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman to the south. It is a federal parliamentary republic consisting of four provinces and four federal territories. With a population of about 193,238,868 (July 2013 estimate), it is the sixth most populous country in the world, ethnically and linguistically diverse, with a semi-industrialized economy. Terrorism, poverty, illiteracy and corruption are major challenges.
