Anisotropy in the mechanical properties of aluminum strengthened by a grid of stainless steel

1973
1. The authors have investigated the angle dependences of the strength, yield point, and relative elongation for a composite material made of aluminum with a steel grid at an angle to the axis of loading of the specimen. 2. As the angle of orientation of the grid varies from 0 to 45 °, the following phenomena are observed: a) the strength σt first falls, then at about 45 ° it begins to rise and recovers its original value σ0; b) the standard yield point σ0.2 decreases, reaching a minimum at 45 ° c) the relative elongation δ rises as the angle increases, reaching a maximum at 45 °. 3. Satisfactory agreement was obtained between the experimental data for the angular dependence of the yield point and the theoretical estimate for a plane-stress model of an orthotropic material.
