Characteristics and diagnostic potential of echo enhancers based on galactose

1997
The first echosignal enhancing agents have been approved by health authorities. Most agents are based on microbubbles because of the unique acoustic properties of the latter. The increase in echogenicity can be exploited for B-mode scans as well as for Doppler examinations. Contrast-enhanced B-mode imaging is well established in right-heart echocardiography using agitated solutions. Inherent limitations of the home-made agents can be overcome by the use of a “right-heart” agent such as Echovist, after i.v. injection the blood becomes temporarily visible. Transpulmonary stability of contrast agents is required for opacification of the left heart cavities.
