Zero CO 2 emission electric power generation using Magnetohydrodynamic generator

2017
In this study, zero CO 2 emission high efficiency power generation system based on Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) generator was proposed. Proposed system was driven by combustion product of fossil fuels burned with pure oxygen. Such combustion system has inherent advantages as 1) high temperature combustion gas and 2) simple components of combustion gas. The former has possibility to achieve high thermal efficiency if high operation temperature system as MHD generators are applied. And the latter causes simple system for separation of CO 2 from combustion product. Furthermore, produced CO 2 can be effectively used for so-called CO 2 enhanced oil recovery (EOR). We could conclude that high efficiency above 55% could be expected with high temperature combustion gas of pure oxygen burning if MHD generator was introduced. Furthermore, energy and cost penalties of air separation unit which produced pure oxygen were successfully compensated by this high efficiency. No special separation system was required because it is easy to separate CO 2 from H 2 O without N 2 origin gases. Low heat value Bio-gas can be used without purification due to pure oxygen burning. And finally, produced CO 2 could be effectively used for CO 2 EOR.
