Combined cycle repowering options

1992
Combined cycle repowering provides a means of reducing SO{sub 2} and NO{sub x} emissions at certain coal-fired power stations in response to requirements imposed b the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 and also to local ambient air quality standards. In addition, repowering provides an opportunity to substantially increase net generating capacity, diversify the fuel mix of the GPU system, extend the economic life of the repowered stations, and reduce operating and maintenance costs. The primary disadvantage to repowering is the requirement to burn an expensive fuel (natural gas or coal gas) relative to coal. This paper summarizes the results of these investigations for two of the GPU stations.
