A novel front end module for 77 GHz automotive radar implemented on low temperature co-fired ceramic technology

Automatic cruise control systems based on 77 GHz radar has been the focus of significant research for many years now. Recently this technology has moved to commercial stage with all major auto manufacturer has very active programs to introduce platform wide ACC systems in the immediate future. A primary issue with adoption of 77GHz radar systems for automotive applications is their ability to distinguish between non-moving objects and the car in front of them that is rapidly braking. For example, overhead bridges, cars stopping on side streets, tunnels and other obstacles, which currently solutions on the market have issues with and is the primary issue with it being mandated as active braking systems. This paper will address how current automotive radar systems attempt to solve (or not solve) this problem and will detail a design of a Front End Module (FEM) can be implemented and outperform any system on the market today. This paper presents the design of the FEM circuit and its system level implementation on LTCC materials system.
