Structural Analysis of Secondary Babbits

2021
Repairing equipment with sleeve bearings requires a large amount of expensive babbit. Babbits have low hardness, low melting point, and increased ductility. They are run-in well in friction units, have high antifriction properties, and resist shock loads well. However, babbits used for pouring into sleeve bearings in the form of shells are not currently produced in the Republic of Uzbekistan, although the demand for them is enormous. The authors of this study have developed a technology to reuse babbit chips for filling shells. For this purpose, the average composition of scrap and waste of babbits has been analyzed. Based on two-component systems, the required three-component state diagrams are constructed with the main alloying elements and impurities, whichare part of the babbit scrap. In addition, this work studies the structural transformations in model alloys and alloys based on recycled babbits in terms of their crystallization process and establishes the nature of the yielding of babbits.
