`Wonkwangbyeo` is a new Japonica rice (Oryza sativa L.) variety developed from irradiated with γ-ray (250 Gy) of `Semjinbyeo` by the Radiation Mutation Breeding Team of Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) in 1997. This variety has about 105 days from seeding to heading in ordinary culture at middle lowland and middle southern area of Korea, Wonkwangbyeo had medium maturity and medium hight with 84 ㎝ in culm length. This variety had more panicle number per hill and spikelet number per panicle and higher ratio of ripened grain compared with `Whaseongbyeo` and Semjinbyeo. It was resistant to bacterial leaf blight and stripe virus disease, but susceptible to major insect pests including brown planthopper. Wonkwangbyeo had non-glutinous endosperm, medium small grain and clear milled rice without white center and white belly, and palatability of cooked rice was excellent. The yield performance was about 5.48 MT/㏊ in milled rice at the ordinary planting and normal fertilizer level. This variety would be adaptable to the middle lowland area of the central and middle southern area of Korea.
