Kidneys are very easily differentiated from the surrounding structures (mainly fat) on T1-weighted images. The renal cortex has a lower water content then medulla and thus a shorter T1. In this way cortex shows the pattern of a peripherally located rim of intermediate signal intensity, while pyramids are shown as triangular areas with low signal.
