The Evaluation of Periodontal Status of Renal Transplant Patients

Aim : To evaluate the periodontal health status of patients who have undergone renal transplantation. Materials and Method : Thirty patients with kidney transplantation that were admitted to the department of periodontology in Dicle University, Dentistry Faculty between 2012 and 2014 were evaluated. Patients’ demographic information, educational status, frequency of toothbrushing, systemic diseases, drugs, gingival hyperthrophy, periodontal parameters, and dental status were examined. Periodontal treatment was carried out. Results : Meanage of patients were 35,85 ± 13,12 years. Educational status of patients; 48,4 % of patients were from primary school. The frequency of toothbrushing was 48,4% twice a day, 41,9 % once a day and 6,5 % were not brushing. The periodontal parameters of patients before and after the periodontal treatment were found as respectively PI; 1,56±0,71&0.53±0.21, GI;0,67±0,42& 0.30±0.19 and CD;1,97±0,53&1.46±0.28 (p<0.001). 7 (23%) of thirty patients had gingival hyperthrophy. Among those patients 3 had used tacrolimus, and 4 cyclosporine and also three of them had used calcium channel blokers beside these immunsupressive agents. Conclusion : To avoid the risk of chronic oral infection-induced morbidity and mortality and also to increase the survey of renal allograft, it is necessary to examine the periodontal health regularly in renal transplant patients.
