Biopolymers in textile industries

2021
Abstract Even before the recorded history of humans, biopolymer fibers were employed for textile apparatus. To date, the low cost and superior properties of synthetic petroleum-based fibers have restricted the utilization of biopolymers in the textile industry. However, the predominance of synthetic fibers over biopolymers will not last long due to the depletion of oil sources and the raising of environmental concerns. The contemporary textile industry is composed of various practices, ranging from direct manufacturing processes to finishing processes. Biopolymers extensively contribute to various textile processes, from fiber manufacturing to the dyeing and finishing processes. Although the shift from synthetic fibers to bio-based materials is rather slow, mostly because of technological barriers, it is inevitable. The employment of biopolymers not only results in the production of a more environmentally friendly product, but also has various advantages, such as low-weight fabrics with low manufacturing costs.
