QUANTITATIVE PHYTOCHEMICAL PROFILE OF BAUHINIA VARIEGATA LINN. LEAVES

2013
Bauhinia variegata (Mandharai) is one of the important medicinal plant that was used for therapeutic purposes in all the systems of medicine in India. It belongs to the family Caeselpinaceae. The plant (leaf) was analyzed for the presence of phytochemicals, nutrients, vitamins and minerals. The plant leaves were found to contain 4.643 ± 0.39mg of GAE/g of Phenols, 1.643 ± 0.1mg of QE/g of Flavonoids, 18.54 ± 1.64mg of GAE/g of Tannins, 7.54 ± 0.52 mg/g of Alkaloids. It also contains 8.0 ± 0.1mg/g of protein, 6.932 ± 0.48 mg/g of sugars and 10.18 ± 1.28 mg/g of amino acids. It contains 4.84± 0.47mg/g and 4.86±1.5mg/g of Vitamin C and Vitamin E respectively. The leaves were also found to be a good source of Ca, Mg, K, P, Fe, Zn, Cu and Na. Thus this study provides some biochemical basis for the ethno medical use of this plant in various parts of India.
