Application of high temperature superconducting materials to electric motors

1990
Electric motors provide a potential application area for high temperature superconducting materials. A rotating field synchronous machine architecture has been selected as appropriate for the targeted applications. The mechanical design of a field winding surrounded by a rotating cryostat may probe to be one of the most challenging design problems in the effort to develop a viable product. At present, HTSC material properties are only adequate for very simple demonstration motors such as the dc motor described in this paper
