Study of the Methanol Extract of Euphorbia segetalis

2002
From the methanolic extract of Euphorbia segetalis, the coumarin scopoletin (7-hydroxy-6-metoxycoumarin) (1), the steroids β-sitosterol-D-glycoside (2) and 13-sitosterol (3) and the tetracyclic triterpene 24-methylenecycloartanol (4) were isolated and identified. Their identification was based on spectroscopic data (IR, MS, 1H and 13C NMR). Scopoletin showed free radical scavenging activity against the 2,2-diphenyl-l-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and inhibited bleaching of β-carotene. The evaluation of the antibacterial activity of 1 and 2 as well as the antifungal activity of 1 was also carried out.
