Initial investigation of dual-frequency-channel roadside-to-vehicle safety communication system

2007
In addition to stand-alone autonomous vehicle safety system, roadside-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-vehicle communication systems have been proposed as part of ITS development to help achieve vehicle safety and realize more secure road traffic environments. A roadside-to-vehicle communication system is proposed that utilizes two radio wave frequency bands (5.8GHz and UHF), to improve the latency and availability performances comparing with single-frequency-channel system. An initial performance and feasibility investigation through computer simulation and field experiments was undertaken. It is concluded that dual-frequency-channel roadside-to-vehicle communication system is the next logical step toward reliable vehicle safety communications.
