The Changing Roles and Expectations of Faculty

2015
Abstract Academic health centers (AHCs) are undergoing profound changes, and the roles and expectations of their faculty must also evolve. Competition is intense in each of the tripartite missions, and most faculty need to focus intensively on a primary area of concentration. Educators must apply new technologies and insights afforded by adult learning research in meeting the needs of our diverse student populations. The pipeline of clinical investigators needs expansion. Basic scientists must embrace interdisciplinary “team science.” The important perspectives of population health and public health should be incorporated into all missions. Clinicians, the bedrock foundation for AHCs, must receive resources and recognition if they are to maintain enthusiastic engagement. Deans and other AHC leaders should promote institutional change, including modifications in university and school policies which will support the ability of all faculty to achieve their full professional potential.
