Anatomy of the premaxillary area

1998
Introduction. The aim of this study was to provide data concerning the exact anatomy of the premaxillary area. Material and methods. Six cadaver noses were sectioned in the coronal (n = 4) or the transverse (n = 2) plane. The sections were stained according to the method of Mallory-Cason and examined by light microscopy. Results. The chondro-spinal junction shows a relatively wide structure, filled with loose connective tissue fibres. More posteriorly, the chondro-premaxillary junction shows a narrow suture with a number of crossing fibres between the perichondrium and periosteum. Conclusion. The anatomical relationships give rise to the conclusion that the chondro-spinal junction provides stability and at the same time allows a certain mobility, while the chondro-premaxillary junction provides stability without mobility.
