Structural Optimization for the Gusset Plate in the Boom Structure of Concrete Pump Truck

The unique design method for the gusset plate inserted in the boom structure of concrete pump truck was established. The suggested design method was based on the orthogonal array technique and the design from this method was supported by a coordinated modeling effort. The boom of concrete pump truck has generally suffered from torsional loading caused by geometrical asymmetry and various external loading such as concrete pumping and gust and so on. In general, gusset plate located inside the boom can enhance the torsional strength but the stress concentration at the welding zone between boom and gusset plate is inevitable. In this study, therefore, the design method, which can maximize the torsional strength and minimize the stress concentration, was proposed through structural optimization technique. The minimum twisting and stress range was selected as the objective function and this optimization procedure was achieved by the fractional factorial design. As a result, this design method can contribute to save the outstanding maintenance cost in the construction field in that this method applied to several box-type boom structures and therefore enhance the fatigue life of construction equipment.
