Introduction Disseminated seminoma is the paradigm of a curable cancer and the cure rate has now attained 95%, with extrapulmonary visceral metastases being the main identified prognostic factor. During the 1990s, systematic radiotherapy delivered to residual lesions was shown to be pointless. The size of the residual masses was suggested to predict the likelihood of viable seminoma and therefore the group at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital recommended surgical resection of postchemotherapy masses larger than 3 cm.
