Internet of Things‐Enabled Systems and Infrastructure

2021
Over the last several decades, there has been a transition from a paradigm that may be referred to as the “Things of Internet (ToI),” toward an “Internet of Things (IoT).” ToI is mainly attributed to services that operate using the Internet infrastructure, such as voice services, messaging, browsing, etc. However, the IoT comprises of a network of objects and devices that were previously standalone in their operation. It is empowering existing infrastructure systems to operate autonomously and more efficiently as compared with human controlled operations. This chapter provides an overview of how the Internet of things has revolutionized the operation of infrastructure systems with a focus on mission‐critical applications.
