Preliminary results of optical and near infrared imaging of GPS radio sources: Evidence for an obscured AGN?

2008
We present preliminary results of optical and near infrared imaging of four GPS radio sources. Both of the objects which we can resolve (0108+388 and 2322−040) show distorted isophotes consistent with our previous indications that GPS galaxies are disturbed looking. Three of the four objects (0108+388, 1413+349, 2322−040) show evidence of having red nuclei. These sources are consistent with having central engines which are obscured by gas and dust. The large amounts of gas and dust inferred are consistent with both the ‘‘smothered’’ and ‘‘frustrated’’ radio source hypotheses for GPS sources.
