Majuba underground coal gasification project

Abstract The Majuba UCG project has been developed by Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd (Eskom), a vertically integrated public electricity utility in South Africa. The project, located in the South African province of Mpumalanga, has been under development since 2002. It is the largest, the longest running and the most advanced UCG project outside of the former Soviet Union. The technology to the project has been provided by Ergo Exergy Technologies Inc. (Canada). The project has been targeting the provision of UCG syngas produced in Majuba coal deposit as a fuel for power generation to a CCGT power plant. The chapter focuses on technical and environmental aspects of the project development.
