Keys to successful implementation of a professional development program

2020
Abstract Development as well as sustenance of career and professional development programming is a dynamic and ever evolving process. Ph.D. students and postdocs require appropriate training mechanisms in order to be innovative researchers of the future, as well as polished professionals who can be employed in diverse job sectors. UC Irvine's Graduate Professional Success in the Biomedical Sciences (GPS-BIOMED) initiative prepares our trainees for both academic and non-academic careers via programming in four categories: exploration, training, experiential learning, and transition. Program development involved utilization of existing career resources on-campus, building valuable new partnerships, and initiating collaborations within and outside campus. A key element is science communication training for students to share their research to a wide variety of audiences. Additionally, keeping alumni engaged in programming to serve as speakers and mentors has helped not only in career exploration but also in career transitions.
