Incidence and prevalence of hospitalization from hypoglycemia in diabetic patients at Muang Sam Sip Hospital

Introduction: Hypoglycemia is an important complication in diabetic patients. The objectives of this study were to measure incidence and prevalence of hospitalization from hypoglycemia in type 1 and type 2 diabetic patients at Muang Sam Sip Hospital, Ubonratchathani. Materials and Method: This was a descriptive study. Type 1 and type 2 diabetic patients admitted to hospital with hypoglycemia between January 1, 2009 – December 31, 2011 were identified by ICD 1 0 code (E10x, E11X, and E16X) from electronic health record in Muang Sam Sip Hospital. Descriptive statistics was used for data analysis. Results: The number of the diabetic patients who visited diabetic clinic from 2009 to 2011 was 1,678, 1,879 and 1,819 cases respectively. The incidence rates of hospitalization with hypoglycemia were 3.2%, 3.3% and 3.2% in 2009, 2010 and 2011 respectively. The prevalence rates of hospitalization with hypoglycemia were 3.3%, 4.0% and 3.8% in 2009, 2 0 1 0 and 2 0 1 1 respectively. Only type 2 diabetic patients were hospitalized with hypoglycemia. The incidence and prevalence of hospitalization from hypoglycemia in diabetic patients during these 3 years were similar. Most hospitalized patients aged over 65 years, diagnosed with diabetic over 5 years, insulin user and treated with monotherapy. Conclusion: The incidence of hospitalization from hypoglycemia in diabetic patients during 2009 – 2011 was 3 . 2 - 3 . 3 % and the prevalence was 3.3 - 4.0% during 2009 – 2011.
