New Species of Deep-Sea Anglerfish of the Genus Gigantactis (Lophiiformes: Gigantactinidae) from the Western North Atlantic Ocean

2002
Abstract A new species of the ceratioid anglerfish genus Gigantactis is described from a single specimen collected in the western North Atlantic. Clearly a member of the Gigantactis macronema-group, it is unique among members of this group and among all other described species of the genus in having a combination of features that includes a long illicium, unique escal morphology, and exceptionally long caudal-fin rays. A revised key to the species of the G. macronema-group is provided.
