La Politique de Pékin (1914–1940): A French-language magazine as a forum for the translation of modern Chinese literature

2020
La Politique de Pekin (1914–1940) was a weekly French-language magazine founded in Peking by Alphonse Monestier. Beyond its political aspect, the magazine witnessed a literary revival in China at the beginning of the twentieth century and dedicated a permanent space to the translation of the new Chinese literature. This article explores a corpus that has been seldom studied, but is nonetheless essential to the history of the French translation of modern Chinese literature. After summarizing the journal and its dual cultural identity, the paper provides a consolidated list of the translations and presents their different purposes. The focus is on the work of native translators, which prompts an examination of various issues, such as the translator’s position, the editorial strategy, and the power balance between two cultures.
