Evaluation of physical characteristics of aromatic rice grown at different locations

2003
Seven aromatic rice varieties grown at 3 different locations were evaluated for their physical characteristics. The observed parameters for paddy grains were length 6.3-10.9 mm, breadth 2.1-2.9 mm, thickness 1.7-2.0 mm, UB ratio 2.17-5.04, 1000 kernel weight 15.1-23.1g, bulk density 0.40-0.57g/cc, density 1.10-1.24 g/cc and porosity 52.10-65.54%, whereas corresponding values for brown rice were 4.8-8.2 mm, 1.5-2.5 mm, 1.4-1.8 mm, 1.92-5.33, 13.1-18.6 g, 0.64-0.75 g/cc, 1.35-1.46 g/cc and 45.25-54.61%, respectively. Milled grains of different varieties exhibited length 4.6-7.7 mm, breadth 1.4-2.4 mm, thickness 1.2-1.6 mm, IJB ratio 1.91-5.13, bulk density 0.76-0.81 g/cc, density 1.40-1.51 g/cc and porosity 43.75-52.18%. Significant interaction was seen between germplasm and environment for all characters except thickness of milled rice.
