Collison-free protocol for local area networks

1988
Abstract This paper defines a new Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA) protocol, where the activities of channel contention and packet transmission occur concurrently. This is achieved through the introduction of a contention channel. which is independent of the main transmission channel. The new protocol is proven correct, in the sense that it guarantees collision-free transmission of packets. Its performance is also evaluated and compared with that of a CSMA/CD protocol.
