This study develops an academic stress reduction program using game play and verifies program effectiveness in order to reduce middle school students’ academic stress. First, a precedent study related to the reduction of academic stress was examined to extract the component and content. Then an expert validation was carried out. As a result, the academic stress reduction program using game play was developed in a total of 12 sessions, which consists of self-efficacy, self-expression, and social support. Second, an academic stress scale was used as a pre-test and post-test tool to verify the effectiveness of the program on 42 middle school students. The results of the study are as follows. The stress reduction program using game play reduced the stress of the experimental group in grades, exams, and studies among the academic factors of academic stress. The participants showed a positive response to social support, self-efficacy, self-awareness and expression, and participants' subjective satisfaction increased with their academic life and school life. Based on the results, the limitations of the study and future research directions were suggested.
